New Music Review #116

Ten more songs you must hear!

Banners - Someone To You

'Someone to You' is a really fun and catchy pop-rock number with a singable, radio-friendly chorus which suggests this will be a grower once it gets that airplay breakthrough. (7/10)

Gavin James - Hearts On Fire

It's been a strong year for Gavin James and if this new song is anything to go by it should be a strong 2018 for him as well. 'Hearts On Fire' is another bouncy, catchy number from him. (7.5/10)

Green Day - Back In The USA

Taking its lead from their famous 'American Idiot' album this boasts the poppiness of that album's title track with more subtle politics, in a surprisingly poppy entry into their canon, taken from their new greatest hits compilation. (7/10)

Hey Charlie - Young & Lonesome

A quirky and funky indie number with strong harmonies and a gentle, yet building presence from the trio, with more bite coming from the guitars and the sing-a-long closer. Neat. (6.5/10)

Liam Gallagher - Come Back To Me

Liam Gallagher continues to roll out some catchy singles, and this fast-paced indie-rock number with a pacey and powerful bridge and chorus keeps up the standard. Cool. (7/10)

Little Mix - Is Your Love Enough?

A little more interesting than their recent singles, the reggae, summery feel to this record gives it a refreshingly distinctive feel. A fun pop single with the work done by the production. (6.5/10)

Queens of the Stone Age - The Way You Used to Do

Going back to the more traditional sound of QotSA, this is a fun rock number with a simple yet strangely compelling dark chorus. A grower. (7/10)

RedFaces - Take It or Leave It

Mixing in indie and electronic, like a more modern sounding Arctic Monkeys, this is a smooth and friendly number from a youthful band. Promising. (6.5/10)

Stephanie Cheape - I Am A Soldier

Built around a funky rhythm and the distinctive vocals of Cheape, this is a stripped-back yet involving number that showcases the talents of this singer-songwriter. (7/10)

Winter Mountain - Platinum and Gold

We recently reviewed the EP from which this is taken and enjoyed it, and this cut from it is a delightfully warming indie number that will delight you. (7/10)

New Music Review #94

How about another ten songs you need to hear?

Blondie - Doom Or Destiny

Another strong song from Blondie's most recent album, with a strong driving forward beat and live-friendly chorus. (7/10)

The Franklin Electric - Burning Flame

'Burning Flame' is a delightfully sweet and gentle ballad with plenty of thoughtfulness in the lyrics. (6.5/10)

Gabrielle Aplin - Waking Up Slow (Piano Version)

The original version is one of my favourite songs of 2017 but this stripped-back piano version is in many ways even more beautiful, thanks to the delightful lyrics and Aplin's accomplished vocals and piano. (8/10)

Green Day - Too Dumb to Die

With a sound harking back to the classic Green Day sound this fun, pop-punk number will get you nodding along with its fast and uplifting rhythm. (6.5/10)

Harry Styles - Two Ghosts

Slower and more sentimental than his last single, this is actually better, its stripped back and smooth delivery working really well. (7/10)

Jaded - In the Morning

Mixing in suggestive lyrics with its punchy trumpets and club sounds this is a funky and fancy club tune. (7/10)

London Grammar - Non Believer

'Non Believer' is another gentle and atmospheric track from London Grammar, with loveable lyrics that really resonate. (7/10)

Stereophonics - Caught By The Wind

Thankfully far better than their awful album lead single this is a much perkier and welcome pop number that sounds much more like the Stereophonics we know and love. (7/10)

St. Vincent - New York

I can't say I'm a huge fan of St. Vincent but I like the vibe and attitude of this song that builds up into a strong vibe with some rather pointed lyrics. (7/10)

U2 - You’re The Best Thing About Me

It's taken quite a few spins for me to enjoy this song but it's a grower with a strong chorus, that proves to be quite radio friendly. (7/10)

New Music Review #72

Ten more songs you really need to hear!

Estelle feat. Tarrus Riley - Love Like Ours

It's nice to hear Estelle back and she returns with this summer-friendly chilled-out duet that is the perfect accompaniment for a cheeky drink and BBQ. (7/10)

GIRLI feat. Lethal Bizzle - Feel OK

'Feel OK' is a catchy, tongue-in-cheek little pop song with a bit of credibility thrown in thanks to a rap from Lethal Bizzle. Fun. (7/10)

Green Day - Revolution Radio

It might be Green Day by-number but it's a return to their older sound and the crisp, pop-punk sound is perfect for this time of year, just don't expect anything revolutionary. (7/10)

HAIM - Little of Your Love

It's not HAIM's best - the repetition of the chorus gets a little bit too much - but it's a fun and perky song held up by their great sounding vocals. (6.5/10)

Imagine Dragons - Whatever It Takes

It might be ticking off the usual sounds and styles of the band as it goes but it's catchy, fun and varied, with a mixture of tempos, vocal styles and production effects. (6.5/10)

Jax Jones feat. Demi Lovato and Stefflon Don - Instruction

Starting off like a cross between the Jonny Quest theme and a dance instruction video, this is a Caribbean-tinged more sober take on songs like the Cha Cha Slide, i.e. a perfect lightweight dance track for summer holidays. (7/10)

KEIR - Probably

With a bass-heavy swagger and an Imagine Dragons sound, this is a stomping, building indie track that leads to a big chorus. Promising. (7/10)

PVRIS - What's Wrong

Following a handful of good singles, 'What's Wrong' is a strong listen, the beat and vocals working together to inject some energy into the chorus. It lacks a huge moment that it feels like it's building up to but it has plenty of energy and by the end will have you singing along. (6.5/10)

Sigala and Ella Eyre - Came Here For Love

It might be pretty by-the-numbers musically - Sigala is phoning it in a little - but Ella Eyre's vocals, the sunny Caribbean feel and the positive Pride-focussed message make up for it. A good summer anthem. (6.5/10)

The Strypes - Behind Closed Doors

It's another retro throwback with this sixties-sounding indie number from the Strypes; innocent, full of great harmonies, and a positive vibe. (7/10)
