New Music Review #107

Ten more songs you need to hear!

AstroVoyager - First Lights

'First Lights' is an atmospheric instrumental with hints of futuristic space travel in its delightful progression - like Muse if they turned their ear to pure synths. (6.5/10)

Bishop Briggs - Dream

An energetic and exciting number with a determined beat and a Florence and the Machine-vibe. A grower. (6.5/10)

The Ghibertins - I'm War (Live in a Cave)

The Ghibertins continue to release some great singles and though 'I'm War' is less bombastic than their previous singles, the deep voice of the lead singer, here demonstrating some emotive fragility; strongly delivered lyrics; and the recognisable guitar riff make this still a worthwhile listen. Plus as a live track is very strongly done. (6.5/10)

Jules Rendell - Old Friend

Though it's perhaps a little too gentle for its own good this is a smooth and soulful number with a chorus that reveals its magic over a few listens. Rendell has a great Emile Sande like sound and this is a good introduction. (6/10)

Junge Junge - I'm The One

'I'm the One', with its soaring production, heart-felt lyrics and uplifting thoughtful delivery, makes for a strong and touching ballad with extra balls. Great. (7/10)

Lucy Rose - No Good At All

Another beautifully sung number from Rose, with her delightful voice wrapped around this gentle number. It's not hugely memorable but it's a pleasant, relaxing piece. (6/10)

Marshmello - You & Me

Its club-sound might be a little off-the-shelf but its Good Charlotte / Blink 182 vibe works well, it's just a shame it would sound better as a less over-produced number. (5.5/10)

Melanie C - Room For Love

With hints of OneRepublic and Timbaland this is perhaps lyrically stronger than it is memorable but it's heart is in the right place and the production lifts it up. (6.5/10)

Shaydee feat Wiz Kid - Make Sense (Clean Edit)

Though its summery sound and video might feel out of place in late October this is a cool laid-back number with a fun vibe. Smooth. (6/10)

Taylor Swift - Gorgeous

Not quite sure it's the greatest of messages hidden within the lyrics, but it's mid-tempo chunky production style works well and the rhythm is cool. (6/10)

New Music Review #41

Another ten tracks you need to hear!

Disciples - On My Mind

Much of the song falls firmly into generic dance but it's the hooky, deeper chorus that means the track stays more on my mind. (6.5/10)

Harry Styles - Sign of the Times

Heavily influenced by the late David Bowie, this is quite a brave first single from the former 1D member. A little slow and ponderous but it grows on you, and feels pretty mature. (7/10)

JP Cooper - Passport Home

'Passport Home' is another smooth, lighters-out song from JP Cooper that is well written and produced. (6.5/10)

The Kooks - Be Who You Are

Taken from their new greatest hits compilation, this isn't quite up to their classic big hits but it showcases their ear for a great tune really well and has that fun sing-a-long indie-pop chorus they're known for. (6.5/10)

Melanie C feat. Alex Francis - Hold On

Mel C can usually be relied on for a few single and though this is more slower than her usual release it has a good heart to it. (6.5/10)

San Cisco - Hey, Did I Do You Wrong?

If you want a gentle, summery indie number then you can't go far wrong with this little number. (6.5/10)

Sigrid - Don't Kill My Vibe (Acoustic)

Much more emotive in its acoustic form, this is a delightfully stripped back little number. (6.5/10)

Tinie Tempah feat. Tinashe - Text From Your Ex

Mr. Tempah continues his journey moving away from his urban routes to something much more commercial and though this song isn't a patch on his early work the balance between his raps and Tinashe's perky choruses works well. But I long for his Labrinth collaborations. (6.5/10)

Urband Soul - Struggle

Coming to our attention after a bit of a gap this is a cool, slow rap with some solid metaphors making a cracking chorus. (6.5/10)

Will Joseph Cook - Beach (I Wanna Make You Mine)

Cook has yet to find a song as brilliant and poppy as 'Girls Like Me' but he's still doing well enough with this single which balances his indie and pop loves. (6.5/10)

New Music Review #22

Another ten great tracks that we love!

Beaty Heart - Glazed

Built around some sweet falsetto-vocals, this is a gentle, touching little number with a heart at the centre of the indie-pop ballad. (6.5/10)

Black Star Riders - Testify Or Say Goodbye

'Testify or Say Goodbye' is another bouncy soft rock number with a catchy chorus. It's not as huge as some of their previous songs but it's still a good 'un. (6.5/10)

Camila Cabello and Machine Gun Kelly - Bad Things

An addictive mix of sweet and sexy pop chorus and slow rap verses, it's arguably Cabello's vocals that make this record and the lyrics are pretty shallow in their sultriness, but the overall mix works well. (7.5/10)

Fergie - Life Goes On

Slowing down her sound has made Fergie much more appealing in this smooth, surprisingly summery number. It doesn't have a huge USP but is fun in its peacefulness. (6.5/10)

James Arthur - Safe Inside

A vast improvement on his previous single, 'Safe Inside' is still a bit like a slurring drunken man singing karaoke but it's heartfelt enough to carry. (5/10)

Joseph - White Flag

'White Flag' is a really catchy pop-country song built around a fun and singable chorus and a smooth production of layered up music and vocals. Brilliant. (7.5/10)

Kiesza - Dearly Beloved

Much more poppy than her previous material, the verses may go on a little too long but it's a pleasing little pop number. (6/10)

Melanie C - Dear Life

The only Spice Girl to really have a decent post-band career, 'Dear Life' is less bombastic than we're used to from her but it's a great little pop-ballad with some thoughtful lyrics. (7/10)

Tony Momrelle - Love Me Again

'Love Me Life' is a funky and catchy little pop number delivered by his soulful voice. (6.5/10)

Yes Lad - Walk Away

The lyrics aren't the most thought-provoking but it's all wrapped up in punky energy that is well worth a spin. (6.5/10)
