New Music Review #113

Ten more songs you need to hear!

BANNERS - Someone To You

Vocally sounding like a rockier Scouting for Girls this is a upbeat and hooky pop-rock number that bounces along pretty nicely. (7/10)

Bastille - World Gone Mad

As cinematic as you'd expect from a song taken from a film soundtrack this is another solid song from Bastille with crisp production and plenty of hooks that build to a sweet crescendo. (7/10)

Ecca Vandal - Future Heroine

Packed with attitude this is an rnb-pop track with bite and a steady building pace with hints at a softer 'Imagine Dragons'. Well produced and a grower. (6/10)

Ed Sheeran - Perfect

The lyrics may be a little saccharine and sickly sweet but as a ballad that will bring a warm glow to people's faces and hearts this works. (7/10)

Fall Out Boy - Hold Me Tight or Don't

Another poppier entry in their discography, this latest from FOB boasts another catchy chorus and a jaunty, fun vibe throughout. (7/10)

The Killers - Rut

One of my favourite songs off their most recent album, 'Rut' is a slower number but the personal lyrics and building production make for an emotive number that crescendos. (7/10)

Liam Gallagher - Come Back To Me

Though not as catchy as his last two singles this is still head and shoulders above some of his earlier solo work and with its Oasis-sound feels like a grower. (6/10)

MIKA - It's My House

Back after a considerable time away Mika returns with 'It's My House' and it sees Mika pretty much on form with another catchy radio-friendly pop track. Expect this to get some traction soon. (6.5/10)

MØ - When I Was Young

With a mish-mash of elements that don't often gel this is still quite a perky and upbeat pop number with some fag-packet, but relatable, lyrics and a fun ska-feel. (6/10)

Paloma Faith - Guilty

Though not her catchiest single the Bond-esque production and vocal delivery and powerful chorus give it a distinctive and dramatic feel. (6.5/10)

New Music Review #108

Ten more songs that you have to hear!

Amanda Mair - Empty Blockings

With a distinctive light and sweet vocal this is a nicely produced and warming indie-pop song built around a delightful vocal delivery. (7/10)

Andrew Applepie & Bjurman - Waltz of Despair

The title may suggest that it'll be a downbeat piece of music and whilst it cannot be described as uptempo its strong production, delicious vocals and interesting electronic vibes make for a beautifully composed chill-out number. (7.5/10)

Belle Ghoul - Lift Me Up

Another great single from Belle Ghoul. Partnered with a brilliant puppet-based video this is a foot-tapping indie-rock number that mixes harmonies, crisp production and a cool vibe into a sweet package. (7/10)

Big Shaq - Man's Not Hot

Chewing the scenery and doing a spot-on parody of the conventions of grime songs and videos this is both funny and pretty memorable. Nice. (6.5/10

Clean Bandit feat. Julia Michaels - I Miss You

Musically it might be a pretty standard affair from Clean Bandit but with Michaels heartfelt delivery of the downbeat lyrics to a missed ex it adds a certain level of emotional impact. (7/10)

Dagny - Love You Like That

One of our favourite artists at the moment this is another great track from Dagny with a catchy chorus, some fun lyrics and a foot-tapping vibe. Uplifting. (7/10)

Disciples - Jealousy

It's not breaking any particular mould created by Disciples but as an upbeat club tune it ticks all the boxes, the Rihanna-sounding vocals keeping things together next to the 90s-throw-back nonsense lyrics. (6.5/10)

The Fizz - Amen

75% of the original Buck's Fizz return with this Abba-esque perky pop song that will please their long term fans; inoffensive and fun, it's a nice slice of pop. (6/10)

MØ - Turn My Heart to Stone

With vocals that flick between Rihanna and a fun falsetto, this is a sultry swagger of a track with jazz influences in its free form structure. Nice. (6.5/10)

Rosko - Snifter

With a clear punky sound this is a raw little number with hints at something a little more commercial in its set-up and delivery. With its Cockney undertones this is a fun little distraction. (5.5/10)

New Music Review #61

Do you want ten more songs you need to hear? Well you're in the right place!

ALMA - Chasing Highs

The best song from ALMA so far, it might have moments of inspiration from many other club songs but it's difficult not to enjoy her lead vocals even if the production is samey and chorus too repetitive. (6.5/10)

Beauty Sleep - All In

'All In' is a catchy pop-indie track with a simple yet summery choral hook and a nice laid-back vibe that will keep you interested. (6.5/10)

Big Boi feat. Adam Levine - Mic Jack

Maybe not up to the power of Outkast at the heights of their power this is still a fun collaboration, though Levine's pop-centrered chorus is more interesting than Big Boi's OK rap-verses. (7/10)

Hailee Steinfeld - Most Girls

The lyrics and delivery are more uplifting and inspirational than the generic music backing, but as a whole this is a well-aimed slice of pop-rnb. (6.5/10)

Hebe - Take Him Down

'Take Him Down' is a catchy, indie-pop number with a catchy central hook that's like a lighter, more care-free, Florence and the Machine. (6.5/10)

Jesse Malin - Meet Me at the End of the World

The vocals may be a little muddied by the production but it's a fun and funky driving little indie-rock song with a warm vibe. (6.5/10)

Kathryn Williams - She Wears A Dress

'She Wears A Dress' is a fun, airy, laid-back number with an early summer vibe. Nice and relaxing. (7/10)

Matrix & Futurebound feat. Calum Scott - Light Us Up

Again, like many of its contemporaries, its the guest vocalist that excites more than the generic club-music, but is plenty of fun festival-focussed power even if it sounds too familiar. (6.5/10)

MØ - Nights With You

Another great pop-rnb song from MØ with plenty of balls, a bass-hefty swagger and a catchy vocal hook at its centre. (7/10)

Rita Ora - Your Song

The lyrics may be a little fag-packet and the chorus tired but it a bouncy pop-feel to keep you smiling, though it's a shadow of her previous work. (6/10)
