New Music Review 2018 #6

Ten more songs you need to hear!

Black Eyed Peas - Street Livin'

Though I'm not usually a fan of songs full of explicit language this new song from the BEP returns them to their original sound with a strong rhythm of rap and rhyming and an important message. (7/10)

Franz Ferdinand - Feel The Love Go

The DNA of Franz Ferdinand practically flows through this track which doesn't really forget its own identity but will please the fans. (6/10)

Kylie Minogue - Dancing

Mixing up her club-sound with a country tinge this is actually a very strong comeback with a great foot-tapping rhythm and catchy chorus. Great. (7.5/10)

Liam Payne and Rita Ora - For You

It's that time of year when we can't escape the questionable latest entry in the film franchise but the songs are usually worth a listen, and this radio-friendly entry is no exception. (7/10)

Nine Dart Finish - Kicking & Screaming

'Kicking and Screaming' is a gentle indie track that constantly suggests it will burst into Linkin Park-esque pent up anger which never comes; instead we get a pleasing guitar-led tune with a strong vibe. (6.5/10)

Sam Gleaves & Tyler Hughes - When We Love

A traditional sounding country song with a strong and heartfelt central message. Beautiful. (7/10)

The Tailormade - Mr Perfect

With a jaunty guitar riff and sixties-sounding vibe this is a great upbeat little retro-pop number with a catchy and quickly singable chorus. A joy, and any song that includes the words 'rotten blokes' is a winner in our books. (7/10)

Tea F't Lizard X - We Met At A Party

'We Met At A Party' is a cool, laid back number that moves with a retro-sounding swagger towards its jazzy chorus. Cool and collected. (6/10)

Tom Grennan - Sober

Arguably his best song yet this is a bouncy, catchy little number with a chorus that quickly sticks in your mind, plus the production works well alongside. (7/10)

Vance Joy - We're Going Home

A song that builds with each listen, this feels like a song that could soon become pretty anthemic. It lacks the unique footprint of 'Riptide' but its clap-a-long positivity and brass-led moments will make you smile. (7/10)

Ten more songs that you need to hear!

Aminé - Spice Girl

It might run out of steam in its over-long verses but it's pop-grime crossover chorus has a wry smile on its face and a hooky feel. (6/10)

A Perfect Circle - The Doomed

Sounding a little like a piratic ELO, this multi-faceted single covers stripped-back instrumental, cinematic stylings and rockier sections in a surprisingly versatile and building hit. (6.5/10)

Cheat Codes feat. Fetty Wap - Feels Great

Though the chorus is pretty generic dance-pop it's ode to youth and the energy in the verse almost make up for it. A little bit too familiar but a strong enough distraction for three minutes. (6/10)

Kehlani - Touch

'Touch' is a gentle sultry little number with simple production that gives Kehlani's sweet and suggestive vocals room to breath. Smooth. (7/10)

Kodaline - Ready to Change

Though the chorus is perhaps not as catchy as previous ones it's great to hear Kodaline back as there's much to enjoy in this guitar-lick hefty pop-rock crossover with an anthemic central chorus. (7/10)

Louis Tomlinson - Just Like You

Though lacking the energy of his last single this is a sweet ballad with enough lyrical buzz to keep it together. (6/10)

Pink feat. Eminem - Revenge

Pink continues her succession of recent fun singles with this more tongue-in-cheek and poppy offering that offers a nice more fun alternative to her more introspective current numbers. (7/10)

Rita Ora - Anywhere

Quite possibly Ora's best single yet, this is a well written and performed introspective song that beefs up the music with something a bit more clubby, though the live stripped-back version is even better. (7.5/10)

Riton, MNEK and the The House Gospel Choir - Deeper

Though the lyrics are anything but deep this is a catchy pop-dance number with the mix of vocal talents contributing into something that keeps the energy and fun high. (7/10)

Tom Grennan - Royal Highness

A little bit like if Danny Dyer started singing, this is actually quite a catchy radio-friendly number thanks to its fun and poppy central chorus and energetic delivery. (7/10)

New Music Review #92

Another ten songs you need to hear!

Alma and French Montana - Phases

Alma's best song so far, it's a mixed bag of styles and not all of them work, but there's enough in its three-and-a-half minutes to keep you entertained with a catchy chorus. (6.5/10)

Embrace - The Finish Line

It doesn't really do much to combat Embrace's downbeat reputation but it's a touching, gentle ballad that hits the right spots. (6.5/10)

Foo Fighters - The Sky Is A Neighborhood

A big improvement on their other recent singles, this is an upbeat and chantable number that has much more to recommend it. (6/10)

Indoor Garden Party - Out of Range

'Out of Range' is a delightfully gentle and sweet pop-country number with harmonised vocals that deliver an emotive punch. (7/10)

Kasabian - Ill Ray (The King)

Sounding more like classic Kasabian than their last single, this upbeat fast-paced song is a great number to sing along to and will get your feet moving! (7/10)

The Lancashire Hotpots - Fussy Eater

We all know one. Another fun catchy and funny tune from the North's premiere comedy band! (6.5/10)

Sam Fender - Greasy Spoon

Quite free-form and gritty, 'Greasy Spoon' has a sparky rhythm and guts that drives the track forward. (6/10)

Scouting For Girls - Dancing In the Daylight

Scouting for Girls are always a bit of a guilty pleasure and never more so on this new song off their latest album. Fitting into their trademark sound this is a shameless piece of joyous pop that will get you singing along. (7.5/10)

Sparks - Edith Piaf (Said It Better Than Me)

The second single from Sparks' latest album and this piano-led ballad is a delight, mixing up the emotion of the lyrics with the class of the duo's music and crisp production. (7.5/10)

Tom Grennan - Royal Highness

Tom Grennan returns with this catchy pop number with a fun driving vibe. Fun. (6.5/10)

Another ten songs you have to hear!

Alibi - Space Man

'Space Man' is a quirky indie song with a fun delivery and a pleasing tongue-in-cheek vibe. (6.5/10)

Avicii feat. Sandro Cavazza - Without You

Though the chorus descends into overly familiar territory for Avicii, and the overall sound of the song is not exactly revolutionary, the bridge and chorus is fun and punchy. (6.5/10)

Hudson Taylor - Feel It Again

The boys are back with this new pop-indie number that, though lacking the huge choruses they're known for, has enough bounce and rhythm to keep that old foot tapping. (6.5/10)

Jess and the Bandits - Sister

Jess and the Bandits have good history with strong pop-country ballads and 'Sister' is no exception, and those lead singer Clemmons is more subtle here there's plenty of guts in the delivery of the heartfelt lyrics. (7/10)

Nikhil D'Souza - Beautiful Mind

'Beautiful Mind' is soaring ballad that builds to a huge crescendo. If you like your singer-songwriter tracks well written and perfectly delivered you need to hear this. (7/10)

Rachel Platten - Broken Glass

Platten returns with another great ballsy pop-song that mixes up some well observed lyrics whilst also wrapping up the words in a catchy radio-friendly chorus. Great. (7/10)

Saint Etienne - Dive

If you want to enjoy something a little more calypso-y this summer when you could do worse than going for the summery vibes of this new song from Saint Etienne. (6/10)

Taylor Swift - Look What You Made Me Do

The new song that has split the crowds, I actually quite like it, the production solid and the lyrics intriguing. The switch to the chorus is as poor as in Ariana Grande's 'One Less Problem' though the Right Said Fred connection isn't that noticeable. It's certainly more interesting and dark than a lot of other similar pop music but might divide her fans, and the experimental Sparks-feel at times pleases me. (7/10)

Thirty Seconds To Mars - Walk On Water

'Walk on Water' is a ballsy soft-rock track with an anthemic chorus, Imagine Dragons-style breakdown, and plenty of attitude. (7/10)

Tom Grennan - Found What I've Been Looking For

This new song from Tom Grennan has bags of energy and a powerful building energy that really grabs you. A great distinctive voice. (6.5/10)

New Music Review #52

Another ten songs you need to hear!

Brad Paisley feat. Mick Jagger - Drive of Shame

Mick Jagger makes this surprise appearance on Paisley's country song. It might be choc-full of country cliches but it's a jaunty, upbeat little number with Jagger's guest appearance a fresh highlight. (7/10)

Callum Beattie - We Are Stars

Coming across as a cross between Coldplay and Keane this is a lovely little ballad with singable lyrics, a radio-friendly vibe and an emotive heart. (7/10)

Elkie Brooks - Love Ain’t Something You Can Get For Free

Classic singer Brooks returns with this retro-sounding love ballad that fits nicely into her already established discography, complimenting her new greatest hits. (7/10)

Imagine Dragons - Thunder

It's a complete rip-off of Mia's 'Paper Planes' but if you forget that this is actually a catchy, quirky little number that works for the band. Though it's so close... (7/10)

Kygo and Ellie Goulding - First Time

It loses a bit of its momentum when it get to Kygo's bland cookie-cutter instrumental chorus but whilst Goulding's vocals are the focus it works. (6.5/10)

Massive Wagons - Back To the Stack

Raising money for charity, this intentional Status Quo sound-a-like is a fun musical pastiche and whilst it might not have the same pop catchiness of the original band this is a fun and memorable tribute. (6.5/10)

Nickelback - Song On Fire

Nickelback have had more memorable songs recently but this mid-tempo soft-rock number still boasts Kroeger's likeable vocals and a powerful chorus. (6.5/10)

OneRepublic - No Vacancy

Ryan Tedder is a little bit on autopilot here but if you're a fan of OneRepublic it's nice to hear more from them. (6/10)

Tom Grennan - Praying

With hints of Imagine Dragons this is a dramatic indie number with rocky hints. (7/10)

Zac Brown Band - Real Thing

At the other end of the musical spectrum after their powerful 'Holiday Road' cover this is a more subtle affair and, though sounding at times like the musical equivalent of Trump's 'Keep America Great' in terms of business, is a slow yet catchy number. (6.5/10)

New Music Review #37

Another ten tracks that you need to hear!

All Time Low - Dirty Laundry

Less in-your-face than I was expecting from All Time Low, this is a surprisingly low-key indie number from them, but it's no less intriguing. (6.5/10)

Arman Cekin feat. Snoop Dogg & Paul Rey - California Dreaming

For the most part California Dreaming succumbs to the stereotypical lyrics you'd expect from a Snoop Dogg collaboration but the very catchy whistle-riff makes it worth a listen, which says it all really. (6/10)

Ed Sheeran - Galway Girl

Almost approaching overplayed status before it's even released as a proper single, this is still a cracking Irish-influenced pop song. Once you hear it will become an ear worm. (7.5/10)

Jennifer Hudson - Remember Me

Joining the ranks of judges on the Voice using the show as a springboard back into music, this particular track if welcome, a delightful mid-tempo ballad with some heartfelt lyrics and a simple but effective delivery. (7.5/10)

Joseph - SOS (Overboard)

Taking a bit of time to come to my attention this pop-indie track boasts what you'd expect from it: a simple yet catchy chorus, crisp production and delightful lead vocals. (7/10)'

Lady Antebellum - You Look Good

Popping up their country vibe this is a catchy ode to that sexy someone, matching the fun swagger of the song's pace. (7/10)

The Magic Gang - How Can I Compete

'How Can I Compete' is a fun indie song with a sing-a-long ending and a loveable heart. Nice. (7/10)

Riscas - Panic Like Tom

'Panic Like Tom' is a solid little indie hit but with its ear for some good poppy hooks. Simple music, but well done with its upbeat guitar riff and hooky repeat of its title. (7/10)

Riton feat. Kah-Lo, Mr Eazi, Davido - Money

What could have been a cliched song suggested by the cash-focussed title is actually a stripped back, Caribbean-themed, number on needing a holiday. Simple but fun. (6.5/10)

Tom Grennan - Giving It All

With the title of the EP this comes through forming part of the lyrics, this is a catchy little indie ballad with the character of Grennan's voice aiding the delivery. (7/10)
